Women vs Men: Social’s Not for Sissies, No Matter What John Tesh Says

As written for Social Media Today

“Women love social media.” That’s how it was explained to me by a female friend and marketing manager. “It gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘social butterfly,'” she continued.

She’s right, of course; we’ve seen lots of studies on this, and they just keep coming. The UK’s Telegraph just reported on a new one from the University of Bath. Their study examined the differences between what women and men like to do online. The verdict? Women like social networking and travel sites, and of course, Pinterest. Men like to gamble, play games and be entertained online.

Listen carefully and you can hear a collective voice from my female readers: “That’s what they like to do offline, too!” Touche.

What Are Women Doing?
Look at the stats on this trend. A whopping 82% of Pinterest users are women. And Facebook and Twitter aren’t far behind, with 57% and 59% female users, respectively. What gives, ladies? Why are you so fond of social scrolling and mouse messaging?

According to my friend it’s because, “Social media is a great way for us to fulfill our stereotypes – you know, that all girls like to do.” So, what do they do? The team at RankPop.com has a couple ideas…

Let’s Step It Up, Guys!

We use social, and it doesn’t make us sissies, not matter what John Tesh says. It’s senseless that we don’t have our own cool video like they do. This Labor Day weekend, let’s make it about getting social, and make a statement to RankPop, that we know how to pin a pic on more than just the cork board above our table saw.

Here’s some really manly social media things to do, starting this weekend:

The Awesomer is a site I started following recently. These guys have hundreds of interesting products that cater to the discerning gambling, gaming, and entertainment tastes of men. The Octane 120 Beer Arcade, for example, has no necessary function but offers sit-down arcade racing, a video projector and an in-dash beer tap.

Gentlemint – Mashable coined it a “Pinterest for men” when it first launched. Pictures of cigars, motorcycles, power tools and other cool stuff. It fits the bill. Get in there.

If you don’t like Gentlemint, MANteresting is another one. With the ability to fist-bump up Cliff Clavin quote on the front page, these guys know what we like.

JackThreads – The website title says it all: Real Fashion for Guys. Members-Only Prices. And they’re not talking about the jackets, folks. Just ordered myself a green snake-skinned pattern wallet. Now that’s cool.

Kohls-hat-socialmarketingfellaArtofManliness.com is another one I’ve started following recently. Cool tips on grooming and stuff, with awesome graphics of early century bare-knuckle boxers.

Kohls.com – This last one is a bit more of a stretch, I know. But I love this place, and let’s face it, this is one cool hat. Available online only, buy one get one free. That’s just rad. Guys, we can cyber shop, too. It’s cool again. I’ve declared it.
